Dylan smiles and holds his BINGO board at Adult Rec BINGO night

For Dylan and his family, joining Community Living’s Adult Recreation program has opened up a world of friends, fun, and freedom. “I like doing all the activities and being with my friends,” Dylan says, and his calendar is always filled with events he’s excited to attend. Bingo, bowling, pottery painting, and dances are just a few of his favorites. And there’s one friend in particular who stands out to him: Laura. “We bowl together and I see her at the dances,” he shares. “We’ve even gone to the movies and out to eat together.”

Having friendships like these has been incredible for Dylan, and Judy, his mom, has seen the difference. “Dylan didn’t have many friends in high school, but now he has so many friends through Adult Rec,” she says. “Watching him cheer on a friend at bowling, and seeing that friend cheer him on when he bowls a strike—it just makes our hearts full.”

Beyond the fun, Adult Rec has given Dylan more freedom. “I like feeling independent and making choices on my own,” he says. “I always go places with my family, but Adult Rec gives me the opportunity to go places without my mom and dad.” Judy couldn’t agree more, noting how much Adult Rec has helped Dylan branch out. “It’s been amazing for his confidence,” she explains. “He surprises us by trying new things that we might not have tried to do with him. Adult Rec gives him that chance.”

And when he comes home from an event, Dylan can’t wait to tell his family all about it. Judy says, “He’s always excited to share what he did with his friends and who he met. It’s like he’s found his own little world.”

Dylan knows that no matter where they go, he can count on the Adult Rec team to make him feel at ease. “The staff always talk to me and answer all my questions. They joke around with me and that’s fun,” he says. Judy adds that their kindness goes a long way: “The staff are always happy to see Dylan when he arrives. They always have a smile and are patient to listen to all of his stories. They are always helpful and encouraging to Dylan when he is unsure about participating in a new activity.”

For Judy and her family, seeing Dylan’s confidence grow has been one of the biggest gifts of all. “Adult Rec gives Dylan a community he never had before,” she says. “He’s accepted and supported by staff and friends.”

“Adult Rec gives Dylan a community of people he never had before.

He is accepted and encouraged by staff and friends.”
