Lead Medical Direct Support Professional

Position Summary:
The Lead Medical Direct Support Professional in the Residential Program provides support to persons served with developmental disabilities that require protective oversight, behavioral support, or assistance with the activities of daily living (ADL) and certain independent activities of daily living (IADL), and provides leadership and direction to Direct Support Professionals.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Becomes familiar with individuals’ program file. Performs activities outlined on the program plan to achieve the goals and expectations identified by the parents/program coordinator.
- Follows through with all physician orders and treatment plans, utilizing nursing and supervisory support as appropriate.
- Provides medical providers, nursing staff, management, families, and co-workers with appropriate information and/or documentation as needed to meet the needs of the residents (clients).
- Tracks, schedules, and attends doctor’s appointments.
- Ensures all documentation is done accurately and on time.
- Transports persons served safely.
- Incorporates assistance of persons served as often as possible in order to teach life skills. Example: meals, hygiene, and daily living.
- Assists persons served with activities of daily living such as feeding, toileting, personal hygiene, and changing clothes.
- Maintains discipline and order in a manner agreeable with parents and agency directives, as well as with the person served program plan.
- Ensures the safety and welfare of all persons served.
- Gets to know each person served and anticipates the persons’ served needs.
- Passes medications without error. Oversees and order medication supplies as needed.
- In case of an emergency requiring medical care, 911 should be called and an ambulance should be summoned.
- Completes and maintains all required trainings.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
Management/Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Lead Medical Support Staff is responsible for directing and supervising the daily activities of the direct support professionals and the programs at the Residential Homes.
- Maintain weekly staff schedule. Ensure adequate staffing is provided for all persons served needs.
- Develop and post weekly staff assignments/tasks.
- At times will be required to take weekend call in cases where the manager may be absent.
Qualifications:
Education, Experience, Skills:
- 18 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 6 months’ experience as a Medical Support Professional is preferred.
- Possess sound oral and written communication skills as well as decision-making skills.
- Possess good listening and comprehension skills.
- Must be able to write and document in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
- Successful completion of the Medication Administration Class Training.
- Possess the ability to use Microsoft Office applications including, but not limited to Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to work as a team member.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- Driver’s License
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
- Drive large van to and from events, programs, etc. Must assist persons served entering and exiting the van. Lock down wheelchairs on vans.
- Physically assist persons served as needed.
- Lift persons served who cannot bear weight.
- Push and maneuver wheelchairs.
- Moderate Work – Exerts up to 50lbs of force occasionally and 20lbs frequently. Standing, sitting, reaching, typing, and walking are common.
